Freemans Student Fashion Contest Winners Announced
Back in April, Freemans launched the Student Fashion Writers Competition, aimed at offering budding young fashion pundits the chance to have their work published on this very blog. All they had to do was write us a description of how they would create the perfect summer outfit for a woman in her mid-thirties to early forties, using items from the Freemans catalogue.
We’ve been inundated with entries from some seriously talented young writers, so big congratulations to our winner Helen Wilkinson from the University of Kent fashion course. Helen’s fabulous article really struck a chord with our judges, who loved her glamorous but age-appropriate selections and witty writing style. Helen will be contributing a guest article to this blog very soon, and a brand new Ipad is also winging its way towards her!
We caught up with Helen to find out how she feels about the competition and her future in fashion.
First off, you could tell us a little bit about when and why you first became interested in fashion?
I think a more apt question would be when have I NOT been interested in fashion! As a toddler I loved to play dressing up games and I’ve always been fussy about what I wore even since primary school- I remember going to the Millennium Dome when I was 8 and throwing a tantrum because my Mum dressed me a hideous striped top!
How would you describe your own style?
I love to feel feminine, I’m rarely caught in trousers and I’d choose a pretty dress over jeans any day. That being said, I favour a classic look, my current obsession is a simple black dress that can be teamed any number or different colours and accessories to create a different look every day.
What are the factors that make up a perfect outfit for you?
I’m a big believer that accessories can make or break an outfit. For me, an outfit wouldn’t be ‘perfect’ unless it had a great bag, belt or jewellery that completes the look.
Do you think the fashion industry offers enough choice for mature women?
So many high street shops are aimed directly at young people nowadays and I believe many shops neglect that key ‘in-between’ demographic of women with a more mature style who still want to look on-trend. It’s got a lot easier recently however, with the advances of online shopping catalogues. Also, websites like the Freemans blog that offer advice for women who want to dress in a more sophisticated way are brilliant.
And finally, how did you feel when you heard that you'd won?
I was absolutely ecstatic! The knowledge that the judging panel actually enjoyed my article enough to name me the winner was on a different level- it’s my dream to be a fashion writer and this competition has really spurred me Thank you Freemans!
We also received so many fantastic entries that we had to award some runners up prizes too. Congratulations to B Parker, D Pygott, N Thobani and R Webber who won brand new Blackberries and Ipod 8Gs. We’re sure you’re going to be hearing a lot more from all of these talented ladies in the future. In the meantime watch this space for Helen’s up-coming guest blog, and for future student writing opportunities from Freemans.
