In Praise of Peplums
When it comes to women’s dresses, summer really does leave us spoiled for choice. You could wear an exotic maxi-dress, a playful sun dress or an elegant shift. However, this season we want to sing the praises of one of the more underrated members of the dress family – the peplum.
Peplums are a sort of two-in-one dress with a piece of pleated fabric creating a mini-skirt effect on a longer dress. You can also get them on jackets and blazers. They first came to prominence in the 40s and enjoyed a big comeback in the 80s, so they’re great if you have a taste for vintage. However, as with most things 80s, they’ve recently gone beyond retro novelty and enjoyed another return to the catwalks.
A peplum dress is very girlish, which makes it perfect for the summer. Ideally they should be worn with heels for the full feminine effect. One pitfall to avoid is over-accessorising. In particular, steer clear of anything else that adds excess volume – for example a jacket with very wide shoulders – the peplum adds enough as it is.
This Closet Gathered Neck Peplum Dress is a perfect example of how a simple, functional and seasonal peplum dress should work. The monochrome keeps things uniform and the shape is flattering. This is another great advantage to the peplum – it can really help to balance out your mid-section if you’re an apple or a rectangle shape.
You could also choose to really play up the 2-in-1 element of the peplum with some contrast colours. This black top/peach skirt number is giving us major Katy Perry vibes, which is of course a very good thing. After all, few celebrities have managed to nail the vintage look as effectively as the former Mrs Brand! Take a leaf out of our model’s book and pair this dress with some equally playful heels.
