Colour coding is a fundamental part of how we perceive the world. From traffic lights and warning signs to emotional states and political leanings, we associate a colour with practically everything we do that requires some kind of distinction, and fashion is no exception. The colour you wear and the way you wear it makes an instant statement about who you are. So it’s worth giving some consideration when picking a new outfit. Here are just a few of the many ways in which you can use colour to make the right impression.

Traditionally, we’re a reserved lot here in the UK, and the classic British look has always been essentially understated – with a hint of ostentation for a special occasion. Nobody understands that better than the Duchess of Cambridge, who once again scored an effortless fashion victory at last weekend’s Jubilee in a classy long-sleeved red dress by Alexandra McQueen. The maple-leaf hat added a celebratory touch, but the dress was in the classic Middleton mould of looking great without giving too much away. This gorgeous short sleeve wrap dress with smooth, flattering silhouette, mid-length sleeves and a below-the-knee skirt just oozes royal class.

Fashion is having a bit of a futuristic moment this season, with the soft reflective sheen of metallic making a major comeback. This month alone we’ve seen Heidi Klum rocking the red carpet in a stunning silver two-piece while lady of the moment Rihanna was spotted looking uncharacteristically demure in a floor length metallic maxi dress.

The appeal of metallics to the stars isn’t difficult to figure out. It’s bold without being brash, looks great against almost any skin tone – although if you’re very pale you might want to accessorise it with something in a warmer colour to avoid the ice maiden look – and lends itself beautifully to a bit of statement jewellery.

A great evening dress should strike the perfect balance between classy and functional. You should avoid anything too clingy or heavy, as nothing is more likely to put a dampener on your evening than feeling self-consciously sweaty and overheated! An elegant maxi dress will cascade beautifully and give you enough freedom of movement to feel comfortable in all temperatures. Some Exotic Print will add a sizzling seasonal touch.

When it comes to choosing a women’s top or dress, for many of us it can feel like we’re trapped between two options – skin-tight or bulky. A lighter piece is great for warmer weather, but clingy material can be quite unforgiving if you don’t have a particularly toned tum. The alternative is covering up; either in extra layers that can make you feel overheated – or in shapeless, loose-fitting tops that can be just as unflattering. If you’re crying out for a third way, we have two words to say to you – wrap top.

If you’re the kind of fashion hoarder who has a shoe collection to rival Imelda Marcos and a wardrobe stuffed with dresses that haven’t seen the light of day in years, it might be time to bite the bullet and indulge in a little bit of spring cleaning. Letting go of long-cherished old clothes can be a painful experience, but you’ll be amazed how much better it can feel to cast out the old and make room for the new.

Peplums are a sort of two-in-one dress with a piece of pleated fabric creating a mini-skirt effect on a longer dress. You can also get them on jackets and blazers. They first came to prominence in the 40s and enjoyed a big comeback in the 80s, so they’re great if you have a taste for vintage. However, as with most things 80s, they’ve recently gone beyond retro novelty and enjoyed another return to the catwalks.

One of the first rules of fashion is that no two women look the same. Have you ever tried on a dress that looked fantastic in the catalogue but strangely just didn’t hang well on you? Of course, we all have. Finding out what works for you can be a matter of trial and error, but a good way to discover what kind of cuts and styles are going to be most flattering on you is to be aware of your own body shape.

Most women fall into one of four basic body shapes – apple, pear, rectangle and hourglass. You should be able to work out which you are with a simple look in the mirror and by remembering what parts of your body tend to look good, and which parts often need a little extra work.
