The jewellery from this range as well as being hand crafted by some of the most skilled jewellers in the Jewellery Quarter, the gold, diamonds and hallmarking are all sourced within the Jewellery Quarter. For over 200 years Birmingham?s Jewellery Quarter has been the home of some of the worlds most highly skilled goldsmiths and jewellery makers. Development in the quarter was rapid in the 18th Century where houses were built for manufactures. The famous industrialist, Matthew Boulton made a successful mission to establish Birmingham?s own Assay office. The Jewellery Quarter is now a tourist attraction in its own right, with many traditional jewellery workshops. The area is still steeped in history with many historical landmarks and buildings. The Assay office Before 1773 all Jewellery made in Birmingham had to be sent to the assay offices in in either Chester or London to be hallmarked. Manufactures along side Matthew Boulton found this to be unacceptable and organised a petition to parliament to allow the creation of local assay offices. The Birmingham Assay office originally opened 1773, above a public house with only four staff and only open on a Tuesday. The first customer on that day was Matthew Boulton. The hallmark of Birmingham is the Anchor and the story of its origins is rumoured that the choice of symbol was made on the toss of a coin. Having moved to its current home in Newall street the Birmingham Assay office is now the largest in Europe, hallmarking 13 million articles in 2003, it claims to be the largest in the world.
