Student Fashion Writer Runner-Up: Ruth Parker
Back in September, we invited students from all over the UK to share their passion for fashion by writing a guest post for our official blog. We received dozens of fantastic entries, and it was impossible to single out just one, so throughout today we’ll be highlighting our three runners-up. Finally, we’re pleased to introduce Ruth Parker, a student of Lincoln University and active fashion blogger.
What motivated you to enter the competition?
When informed of the Freemans writing competition by my university lecturer, I immediately logged on to the website to start browsing for my outfit to write about: other students may have just thought I was shopping during lessons! I really enjoy writing, and have been thinking about going in to fashion journalism after completing my degree, so was keen to test my skills.
Why do you want to become a fashion writer?
Though I enjoy making and designing clothes, it’s seeing the inspiration and innovation of others that is most interesting to me. I love seeing the new designer trends each season, and through writing I can express my thoughts and opinions for anyone who may want to read them.
Do you feel there are enough competitions out there for students?
I believe that there are a good range of specialised competitions available for students, particularly within the field of fashion. However I think more companies should reach out to students through competitions, as it could be inspiring and benefiacial, not just for the student, but also themselves.
Runner-Up Entry: ‘The Perfect Party Dress for the Holiday Season’ by Ruth Parker
Whether it’s New Year’s Eve, or Christmas Eve, every woman needs a timeless outfit for a party season full of festive dining and cosy cocktails. You’ve already got the gifts and turkey dinner to worry about, so why worry about what you’re going to wear? Freeman’s have it all wrapped up for you this holiday season!
One of the biggest trends for Autumn/Winter 2011 is ‘Sparkle & Shine’, with big designers such as Stella McCartney and Dolce & Gabanna showing metallic glittering gowns, twinned with glitzy heels and some bedazzling bling! So get ready to discover the only dress you’ll need this Christmas to stay on trend and on the money!
The Beaded Sleeve Cross Front Dress by French Connection is the ideal day to night number; a forever-flattering wrap style with a V-neck and a short length to show off a lovely pair of legs. It’s wide shoulders keep up-to-date with another major trend of the season, ‘Forties Glamour’, emphasizing a womanly figure. The semi-embellished silver sleeves are a great little nod towards the catwalk trends, and black and silver are always easy colours to mix and match with jewel-box toned accessories: a statement ring or necklace would complete the look, but the sleeves are almost an accessory in themselves.
For a smart daytime look, twin this dress with black tights, knee high socks and Marco Tozzi Zip Detailed Boots in black, and a leather studded waist belt with a unique buckle. For a flirty, yet sophisticated evening look, swap the socks and boots for the Gianni Gregori Ankle Boots and a studded clutch bag by Religion for a glamourous rock chick look.
