The Art of Matching
When it comes to grabbing an evening dress and preparing for a special occasion, there’s one accessory that all too many of us overlook – our other halves! Wearing matching outfits can be a tricky proposition – wearing outfits that are too closely similar is more than likely to wind up looking naff, but there are ways to make sure that you subtly complement each other without raising too many eyebrows.
For formal events, the best way to ensure a good match is to think about colour schemes. It may seem that there isn’t much room for manoeuvre with a fairly standard men’s suit, but that’s where the tie comes in. It could be as simple as getting your partner to wear a black tie to match your black evening dress, red for a red dress and so on.
However, with a wide variety of tie designs available nowadays, you can afford to be a little more ambitious. Look out for matching or complementary tie patterns, such as horizontal stripes or print. For example the patterns on this Studio Coletti Tie would make an excellent match for this Rose Print Dress thanks to the similar colours and intricately curved patterns.
You could also look at other ways of colour matching without being too obvious. If you both agree to stick to the same two colours, it’s easy to find ways to co-ordinate a little. For example, you might wear shoes the same colour as his shirt. A little black dress paired with some gorgeous blue heels could match perfectly with your partner’s aqua-coloured shirt worn under a classic black two-piece suit -seriously suave!
